Virginia residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person. Same-day voter registration is available, though you may need to cast a provisional ballot if registering on Election Day.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a resident of Virginia.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register at 16, but must be 18 to vote).
- You have not been convicted of a felony, unless your voting rights have been restored.
- Not have been declared mentally incapacitated by a court without restoration of voting rights.
Registration Methods:
- Online Registration:
- Register online through the Virginia Department of Elections Online Voter Registration System.
- You will need a valid Virginia driver’s license or state ID.
- By Mail:
- Complete the Virginia Voter Registration Application.
- Mail the form to your local voter registration office. Addresses can be found on the Virginia Department of Elections website.
- In Person:
- Register in person at your local voter registration office, DMV, or authorized state agencies.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register is 22 days before Election Day for in-person, mail-in, or online registration.
Same-Day Registration:
- Virginia now allows same-day voter registration, but you will be required to vote with a provisional ballot if you register to vote after the regular deadline.
