South Dakota residents can register to vote by mail or in person. The state does not offer online registration or same-day voter registration, so be sure to register before the deadline.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a resident of South Dakota.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can register as early as 17 if you will turn 18 by Election Day).
- Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction.
- Not have been judged mentally incompetent by a court.
Registration Methods:
- By Mail:
- Complete the South Dakota Voter Registration Form.
- Mail the completed form to your county auditor’s office. Addresses can be found on the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website.
- In Person:
- Register in person at your county auditor’s office, driver’s license station, or other authorized locations like public assistance agencies.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register is 15 days before Election Day. This applies to both in-person and by-mail registration.
