How to Register to Vote in North Dakota

North Dakota is unique in that it does not require voter registration. Instead, eligible voters simply need to show up at the polls with valid identification on Election Day or during early voting.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a resident of North Dakota.
  • Be at least 18 years old by Election Day.
  • Have lived in your voting precinct for at least 30 days before the election.
  • Not be declared mentally incompetent by a court.

Voter Identification Requirements:

Since North Dakota does not require voter registration, you will need to bring valid identification when you vote. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  1. North Dakota driver’s license.
  2. Non-driver ID card issued by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
  3. Tribal ID.
  4. Long-term care identification certificate.

Your ID must include your name, current North Dakota residential address, and date of birth. If your ID does not include your current address, you can supplement it with a document that shows proof of residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement.

Voting in North Dakota:

  • Since there is no voter registration, you simply need to appear at your polling place on Election Day or during early voting.
  • Early voting is available in certain counties. Contact your local county election office for more information on early voting options.

Confirm Your Polling Location:

  • You can check your polling place using the Polling Place Locator on the North Dakota Secretary of State’s website.
