North Carolina residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person. The state offers same-day voter registration during early voting but not on Election Day itself.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a resident of North Carolina and the county where you are registering for at least 30 days.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register at 16 or 17, but must be 18 to vote).
- Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction (your voting rights are restored upon completion of your sentence).
- Not be declared mentally incompetent by a court.
Registration Methods:
- Online Registration:
- Register online using the North Carolina DMV Voter Registration Portal.
- You will need a North Carolina driver’s license or state ID.
- By Mail:
- Complete the North Carolina Voter Registration Application.
- Mail the form to your county board of elections. A list of county board addresses can be found on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.
- In Person:
- Register in person at your local county board of elections office, DMV, or other state agencies.
- Same-day voter registration is available during early voting. You can register and vote at the same time if you provide valid identification and proof of residency.
Registration Deadline:
- The deadline to register by mail or online is 25 days before Election Day.
- You can register in person during the early voting period, but not on Election Day.
